Out Of Body experiences are where people have the experience of being outside of their physical bodies. If a person is permanently outside of their physical body then they are often termed "dead", a "ghost", a "discarnate entity" or whatever. It should be remembered however that despite common belief one does not become a "spirit" when one dies. One is a spirit when one is alive. One is a spirit when one is dead. The only difference is that in the former situation one has their own physical body to return to if one is not inside it.
See the Out of Body Experience Research Foundation where people are invited to share their stories (you will find over 150 stories) and learn more about different states of consciousness: Out of Body Experiences (OBEs - meditation, induced, frequent flyers, at-will OBEs), Spontaneous Out of Body Experiences (SOBE), Near-Death Experience (NDE), Spiritually Transformative Events STE) and Nearing End of Life Events (NELEs).
Spiritual Travel has fascinating topics like "Spiritual Geography - The Landscape of Spiritual Travel", "The Self in Spiritual Travel" and "Spiritual Travel as a Rehearsal for Physical Death". The site describes OBE as follows: Spiritual travel is a form of out-of-body experience done voluntarily to achieve a spiritual goal. In order to have an out-of-body experience, the soul or consciousness of the individual must temporarily leave the physical body. During out-of-body experience, the physical senses shut down. When this occurs, an entirely new world opens up to the individual. Spiritual travel is a special type of out-of-body experience where the individual's awareness is heightened, and he or she is able to make decisions and direct the experience. The spectrum of experience afforded by spiritual travel is very broad and can include a wide variety of psychic and spiritual states. In most cases, the spiritual traveler is able to clearly remember the experiences and learn from them.
